The Senses When walking into the woods be aware that all the critters in the area know that you are there. A Blue Jay sitting on the top branch of the highest tree abruptly and loudly announced your coming before you were even near the woods. Once within, all the critters depend upon their superior hearing or sense of smell or sight to know exactly where you are. All the animals have senses far superior to ours. Consider the fact that airports use dogs to sniff out explosives hidden in luggage even if wrapped in plastic. Some dogs can even smell the presence of cancer. The hearing ability of a deer is well known to any hunter and the eyesight of an eagle is legendary. A bear can smell another bear five miles away. The Apache Indians have a saying, “if a pine needle fell out of the sky an eagle would watch it fall all the way down and a deer would hear it land but a bear would have smelled it long before it hit the ground.”.
