Underneath  The Oaks

While across the country storms are raging, rivers are overflowing and high winds are ripping off roofs and pushing over trees, those of us fortunate enough to live within the mountain shadows are comfortably nestled underneath the sprawling oaks protected from the ravages of long lasting rain and wind storms.

True, we are holding our breath awaiting the tremors of a gigantic earthquake we are afraid might be coming at any time. However, those of us in the mountain shadows will have a very long wait, for an earthquake in our mountains is highly unlikely.

While we do not have floods, fires do cause us to shiver and wonder if they will put it out before it reaches us.

It seems that no matter where you live some kind of a natural disaster might befall you.  We can only try and prepare for the worst and feel delighted when it doesn’t happen.

The fact is that living in the mountain shadows is safer than living almost anyplace else. Besides it is more beautiful than most places and the many lovely sights make us tolerant of the stupidity taking place in Washington and in other places too.

It is nearly impossible to get mad when watching a sunset or a red-headed wood-pecker pounding an acorn into a tree trunk.
