The Thomas Jenkins VFW Post 9454 welcomed everyone to the county park in Coulterville on Saturday, April 18th 2009, for a 'Veterans Appreciation Day' and thanked everyone for their support and appreciation of all our veterans. They wanted everyone to enjoy the day, learn something new and to share their needs and experiences with family, friends and other veterans. The day began with the raising of the flag by the Sonora Vietnam Veterans of America 391. The Chaplains address with Ed Ford, of the VFW Dept. of California followed. Then Elmo Hernandez, Hopi Spiritual Elder, gave an American Indian Blessing.

There were many booths providing information on a variety of different organizations in the area that were there to help our local veterans, and their families. There was even a place to sign up for VA Health Care. Many groups and organizations were there that hoped to truly make a difference. Also available was a raffle, and the 'Canteen Wagon' from Coulterville VFW Post 9454 was on hand serving Hamburgers, Polish Sausage, chips, sodas and more. Local Supervisor Lyle Turpin was in attendance at the VFW Service Officer booth, helping to give out information and selling tickets to the BBQ Pig Dinner. The BBQ was the lunchtime center attraction, as the Pig was roasted for about 14 hours and looked to be cooked to perfection! Another fun part of the day was the music of Ron & Marlene Johnson and their band 'Crossroads', they played some great music that was enjoyed by all and truly made the day a festive celebration!
