The Coarsegold Historical Society has developed a full calendar of events for you this year. Our goal is to introduce you to the history of the area in which you live. Eastern Madera County has a fascinating history—and we are offering it to you in the form of walking tours and through the articles that I have been writing for the newspapers. All of the events are on Saturdays. The Coarsegold Historic Museum is open on Sundays from 1 to 4 and Mondays from 9 to 11:30 during winter hours—in May we start summer hours and will be open more days: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. MARCH 15: NEW! The historical society is joining forces with SHSA (Fresno Flats Museum in Oakhurst) for a walking tour of historic Oakhurst. Fresno Flats was a busy town with a lumber mill in the location of the present Vons et al. There is much to tell—and it will be told on this tour. Meet at the Oakhurst Community Center at 10 a.m. Wear comfortable shoes. We will be walking on the road, not in fields. APRIL 26: Walking tour of Hildreth with an extension to Table Mountain. For those wishing to go on the extension, bring a sack lunch. Meet at Spring Valley School on Road 200 at 10 a.m. We will then car caravan to Hildreth. Led by Pat Washburn. MAY 10: Walking tour of Historic Coarsegold. Meet at the teepee in the Historic Village (corner of Hwy 41 and Road 415) at 10 a.m. Led by Marjorie Jackson. JUNE 14: Walking tour of Raymond. Meet at the General Store at 10 a.m. The tour will include the home of the railroad stationmaster. Led by Anita Fulmer. JUNE 21: NEW! Walking tour of Historic Grub Gulch. Plan to walk on uneven ground and fields. Meet at 10 a.m. at the E Clampus Vitis granite marker on Road 600. Led by Anita Fulmer. SEPTEMBER 27: Walking tour of Coarsegold. Led by Kay Good. See May 10 for information. DONATIONS are sincerely appreciated at each of these events.
JUNE 7: ART, DINNER AND MUSIC IN THE MEADOW: This is our big fundraiser for the year. The Historical Society is supported by your donations, memberships, the sale of our book As We Were Told and other books, and this fundraiser. We have expanded the event to include all genre of the arts. We plan to have many demonstrations, contests, good food, and, back by popular demand, the great toe-tapping music of the String Bandits. Save this day on your calendar! We promise a good time!
