COMMENT on the
SIERRA SUN TIMES WORD PRESS BLOG: MARIPOSA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS MEETING OF AUGUST 19, 2008

A 'shooting' was reported near the Mariposa Middle School yesterday morning.
Read what Sheriff Muller had to say about the 'shooting' in the Sheriff Report.

At the Ag-Tourism meeting
yesterday at the Government Center was a representative from Calaveras County talking about Calaveras County and Ag-Tourism. One interesting point mentioned was that Calaveras County also has the goal of Ag Production has to be the primary use of the land but then the income does not figure into the use of the land, only that the actual acreage is used more for Ag production than the Ag- Tourism use.

The Chamber of Commerce 'Business Mixer'
held at River Rock Inn yesterday in the evening hours was another good time with more new members joining the chamber. The
hor'dourves that Vicky served were simply to 'Die for!' Have lunch at River Rock Inn today and for your travel plans contact Kit O'Shell at TKO Travel
tkotravelpro@aol.com

Interesting Fact:

Located in Mariposa County is a rock that when scratched with a knife or a piece of steel will glow!

In the Sheriff Report for Monday was a call about a shooting at Happy Burger.
Owner Dianne Fritz reported that the 'Shooting' actually was a vehicle that backfired and the sound made some folks duck and run thinking it was an actual gun being fired.

Coulterville California Where The Old West Lives On

Guest Writer:
Leroy Radanovich's
Mariposa Life:

The fires of the last ten days demonstrated to Mariposa County the power and strength of the Fire and Emergency Services both here in Mariposa County, and the State of California. Unfortunately twenty-one homes were destroyed. On the other hand hundreds were saved...
SUMMARY OF EVENTS

Sunday Morning, 8:30 AM. New map from CalFire shows the extent of the Telegraph Fire. Many Midpines residents evacuated. Friday the measure for new fire trucks passed. However only 48% of the folks that received ballots responded.
JOBS-JOBS-JOBS-

At the event were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Merrill. Merrill's Mill on Owl Creek in Jerseydale, provided employment for many young men returning from WWII.

Among the treasures left by old friend Hazel Estel, and given to me by her son Dick, is a spiral bound composition book, just like the kind that MES's Alice Ellingham would have us write our essays in.  Contained in this journal are the signatures of Mariposa County residents...

2008 Apple Picking Success
A huge thanks to everyone who participated in this year's apple-picking operation on August 13th. We had a good turn out despite the 100 degree temperatures! Upon final tally, we collectively picked and removed over 75 bags of apples from the two main Valley orchards, totaling 5600 pounds of fruit. Some bags were taken home by park visitors and employees to enjoy. Most apples were donated to the Hornitos Catahoula Ranch. A special thanks to John Leonard's Restoration Crew, the History, Architecture & Landscape Branch, the American Conservation Experience volunteers and Boyscout Troop #50 from Sacramento. A special thanks to DNC for providing their famous bear scat muffins to volunteers.

Yosemite National Park Invites Public To Open House (August 2008)

A new postage stamp featuring the
unsurpassed beauty of Yosemite National Park was unveiled today in a ceremony in Yosemite Valley. This 42 cent stamp, which is part of the American Treasures series, features "Valley of the Yosemite" by Albert Bierstadt. This is the third time in the last two years Yosemite has been featured on a postage stamp.

Tree Failure Advisory - With the rash of unexplained oak tree failures along Highway 140 in El Portal and Midpines, it's time for a reminder warning about Summer branch drop. Summer branch drop is a widely-observed, poorly-understood phenomenon where large horizontal or leaning limbs or stems suddenly break and fall. It seems to occur more on hot, calm afternoons of late summer, and may be associated with heavy foliage and/or heavy seed crops. While we do not have a specific credible threat (lack of outwardly visible defects), consider the "treeland security" threat level elevated to "yellow" while hot weather continues. Recommendations on hot, still, late summer afternoons include: do practice situational awareness; don't leave immobile people (infants, elderly, etc.) directly under large oak trees; do run away if you hear a sharp crack in an overhead oak tree; do report witnessed tree failures. Residents and workers who are under oaks daily may have a higher exposure to risk of tree failure than visitors. For additional information about tree hazards and tree hazard management in Yosemite National Park please go to the following URL: Tree Hazard Management, Yosemite National Park

A new fire was detected Monday afternoon near the top of the Snow Creek Trail. The Arch Fire is currently about 6 acres and is being suppressed, partly because of it's proximity to the historic Snow Creek Cabin. The cabin is not currently threatened. Two helicopters and two air tankers are being used to the suppress the fire along with Yosemite Crews 6 and 7 and the Groveland Hotshots. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

The goal is very easy: you have to clean off the field by matching three or more bubbles of the same color. All exploded bubbles will appear on the field time and again. So in order to clear the playing field and get to the next level you must detonate them all. Master you skills and have fun!
