27th Annual Hornitos Flea Market To Be Held On October 6, 2013

Hornitos-Flea-MarketThe community preparations are underway for the fun filled '27th Annual Flea Market', to be held in 'Historic Hornitos', on Sunday, October 6, 2013. Enjoy a leisurely drive through the beautiful foothills, visit the local establishments, and experience the rich history and atmosphere of the historic town. While you are treasure hunting for that unbelievable find or something you always had to have at the flea market.

Sponsored by the Hornitos Patrons Club, members are responsible for numerous projects and activities in Hornitos and Mariposa County. Monies are donated to the American Cancer Society, outside benches for Stag Hall, 4 High School Graduation Scholarships, a stove appliance & fan for Stag Hall, weed abatement of historic cemetery & jail, Manna House, Mariposa High School Grad Night plus Mariposa High School Student Loan, back to school party including all supplies for local children and the preservation of history in the town of Hornitos with maps & plaques.

The club also hosts the All Soul's Day Candle Lighting ceremony on Saturday, November 2, 2013, and the 65th Annual Enchilada Dinner on Saturday, March 1, 2014.

Mortgage applications for new home purchases in March increased by 15% over February, the Mortgage Bankers Association’s builder application survey shows.

Asparagus harvest accelerates

If you enjoy asparagus with your Easter meal, there will be plenty coming from California fields. The California Asparagus Commission says farmers will harvest good supplies of fresh asparagus through May. Mexican asparagus remains on the market, too. Warm spring weather caused the California crop to mature earlier than usual. California farms produce about 60 percent of the asparagus grown in the United States.


CalPERS seeks fresh faces to manage investments
A one-day CalPERS event for new money managers, who want a chance to invest public pension funds, drew an overflow crowd this month, packing nearly 400 into a Sacramento hotel conference room with another 100 on a waiting list. Public pension systems, with some prodding from legislation, are stepping up a drive to spread their investments to firms owned and operated by minorities and women, often with what were called “mixed” returns so far.

BofA Posts Loss on $6 Billion of Costs Tied to Mortgages
Bank of America Corp., the second-biggest U.S. lender, swung to a surprise loss as the company booked $6 billion of costs tied to mortgage disputes. The first-quarter loss was $276 million, or 5 cents a diluted share, compared with a profit of $1.48 billion, or 10 cents, a year earlier, according to a statement today from the Charlotte, North Carolina-based firm. Adjusted earnings were 35 cents a share, beating the 27-cent average estimate of 12 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

Builders in U.S. Begin Work on Fewer Homes Than Forecast
The pace of U.S. home construction rebounded less than forecast in March, held back by declines in warmer parts of the country that indicate the recovery in residential building will be slow to develop. Housing starts climbed 2.8 percent to a 946,000 annualized rate following February’s 920,000 pace, which was higher than previously reported, Commerce Department data showed today in Washington. The median estimate of 78 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for an increase to 970,000. Permits for future projects declined.
