One of the locations on this year’s 11th Annual Mariposa Farm and Ranch Tour (Saturday, September 30, 2017, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) is Raw Roots Farm. Located on 4 acres in the Sierra Nevada foothill town of Catheys Valley, Andrew and Lauren Gliken (along with son and farmer-in-training son Keelan) sustainably manage an ecologically focused, naturally-grown, no-till community farm that produces enough food to support about 55 CSA members and many more families through farmers’ markets and house sales as well as selling directly to local restaurants in Mariposa and Merced.
Growing a diversity of food crops that are compatible with the seasonal climate they are grown in, Raw Roots Farm also serves as a space to share and teach sustainable living practices like natural building, solar technology, grey water systems, and much more.
Raw Roots Farm’s sustainable methods reflect a unique philosophy that includes every person deserves the right to know not only where their food comes from but that it is healthy and safe, sustainable food comes from local businesses, the practice of agriculture should be done with respect for the land around it (i.e. conservation and sustainable management), and food should be grown without the addition of harmful pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, or any genetically modified seeds.
Raw Roots Farm is located at 4944 Owens Creek Road, Catheys Valley, CA 95306. Lauren and Andrew may be contacted via email (RawRootsFarm@gmail.com) or phone (209) 742-6592.

Butterfly Creek Winery is another of the five locations on the 11th Annual Mariposa Farm and Ranch Tour scheduled for Saturday, September 30, 2017, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Nestled among the Sierra Nevada foothills near Yosemite National Park, the winery boasts “clean air, forest all around, and fields of plump, juicy wine grapes” that grow on the 200-acre Gerken family estate.
The Gerken family arrived in Mariposa in 1972, and have been developing their family vineyards ever since. The mountain spring water, clean climate, and zesty Sierra Nevada soil provide the perfect setting for the premium Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc wines that winemaker Bob Gerken produces.
