Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Utility Forester acts as a liaison between American Tree Medics Inc. (ATM Inc.), utility agencies, customers, contractors and tree crews, and other agencies. The Utility Forester performs hazard and growth assessments of trees, including identification, inspection and evaluation of trees in relation to utility systems, structures, and private homes. May be required to secure rights of way from customers, and handle customer requests for pruning and removal or manage customer concerns. May be required to audit contractor work to comply with utility agency requirements. Will operate forestry computer programs and record systems. May be required to perform storm or emergency hazard assessments. Overnight travel may be required.

Duties:

• Patrols circuits and prescribes work to be performed by contractor.
• Notifies property owners of tree work to be performed relating to client specifications.
• When necessary, obtains permits from public agencies and documents.
• Records tree trimming or removal prescription onto designated forms/ hand-held computer or other similar systems associated to perform duties.
• Audits tree trimming and tree removal work completed by contractors in the field to ensure compliance with work requests and approve standards and adequacy of completed work.
• Maintain working relationships with local client personnel as well as all relevant federal, state and local governmental agencies with which it may become necessary to interact with during the course of performing their prescribed duties.
• Conducts work in a safety-conscious manner as not to endanger themselves or others. 
• Keeps the work area (office and/or company vehicle) neat, orderly and professional in appearance.
• Complies with all regulatory requirements and client vegetation management standards.
• Perform all necessary duties for emergency response in accordance with all safety requirements, law and regulations, and applicable labor agreements.
• Adheres to personal appearance standards and makes a positive personal impression on others.
• Adheres to attendance policies and conforms to work hour requirements.
• Other duties as required.

Education and/or Work Experience Required: 

• Ability to identify or learn to identify local trees and knowledge of growth rates.
• Ability to learn and use company or job-specific equipment.
• Ability to learn and use computers and software systems.
• Ability to work in rugged terrain and inclement weather.
• Ability to read and follow maps.
• Ability to operate a 4x4 vehicle.
• Ability to operate or learn to operate various forestry-related equipment, including but not limited to: clinometer, range finder, logger's tape, DBH tape, and fire safety equipment.
• Verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers.
• Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
• Valid California Drivers License required.
• High school diploma or GED preferred.

Preferred Experience: 

• Preferred 3 years' experience in tree industries or related field work. 
• International Society of Arboriculture certification.
• Forestry, fire, or utility work experience.

• Ability to read and follow maps.
• Ability to operate a vehicle and maintain a valid driver's license.
• Ability to withstand exposure to excessive noise.
• Ability to withstand exposure to dust, gas, fumes or chemicals.
• Ability to perform physical activities such as kneeling, crawling, sitting, standing, bending (waist), squatting, and climbing in rugged terrain.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone.
• Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards. 
• Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
