Scott McGrath
Sculpture, Fine Craft

Scott-McGrathSymbol, signs and mathematics have always been an inspiration for me in the creation of art. Western thought has a rich world of images etched upon its memory. Shapes that mean things. A language of its own that is not phonic. This is the Ideographic System

Art is a process of conveying information with images. It can be abstract or a representation. At the beginning of all my artworks, I like to be abstract. The way math signs visually mean something. Abstraction inspires me because shapes can have multiple meanings. Humans excel at making analogies. In fact, it’s the best thing we have going for us. This is Art: Visual analogy.

Whatever it is that I make, whether it is Decorative Art or Sculpture, the process is similar. Pure Abstraction, shape, form. How does the Eye respond to the visual space? If the object carries out a narrative, it comes out of the void, appears, develops, changes. The art object becomes more involved as adding layers suggested meaning is implied in form. Sign and symbol appear of Abstract shapes found objects carry meaning that can relate to a narrative. In the end, the use of the found object is for form, shape, contour volume or mass. Motion is often implied in my work by the way that the layers are applied. Using the welding process, bits are put together the way a stone mason builds a wall. Find a piece, try to fit in the form. Modification can be made to a piece, but the idea is to keep building, creating form.

The ideas of abstraction guide my art to represent any thoughts that are analogous to the form one is viewing.
