Vote for SFCS’s Learning Garden

Sierra Foothill Charter School has entered its Learning Garden in the Seeds of Change® Grant Program and is asking the community to vote for its application found directly with this link: http://tinyurl.com/m8mpeg4

Having started Thursday, March 30, voting continues through Wednesday, April 19.

You can vote once a day, every day, through the Wednesday, April 19 deadline.

“It would be totally wonderful if community members added the webpage to their favorites through the deadline and voted once every single day,” said SFCS Learning Garden Coordinator Lauren Glikin.

Through the donation of a percent of net sales, this year, Seeds of Change® is awarding $310,000 in total grants to 24 garden projects around the country because they understand the value of food, farming, sustainability, and nutrition education.

At SFCS, every student from transitional kindergarten through eighth grade enjoys a visit to the Learning Garden every week.

“Teachers are continuously raving about how time in the garden not only helps their students learn hands on about growing food and the natural ecosystem surrounding the garden,” said Glikin, “but also provides them a space to grow as individuals.”

Each year, students are asked for suggestions of things to grow or do in the garden. If awarded this grant, SFCS would be able to provide the students with three of their suggested projects.

“First, we will rebuild some of our garden boxes that have slowly deteriorated with age,” said Glikin, “and add seated benches to them. The students would love that.”

Secondly, SFCS would use the grant to purchase new tools and gloves for the students to use.

And finally, SFCS would connect its outdoor kitchen sink's drain to the greenhouse to reuse the water for the plants growing in there.

“Our school relies heavily on community support,” said Principal/Superintendent Mindy Bolar. “This grant would alleviate the financial pressure on the community to help keep our garden growing.”

Earlier this month, the Seeds of Change® Grant Program accepted applications from organizations and schools across the country. SFCS submitted an application highlighting how it would use a Seeds of Change® Grant to grow their gardening program and nourish a healthier, greener community.

From now through April 19, the community is invited vote to support this local garden program by visiting the Seeds of Change® website and voting once per day: http://tinyurl.com/m8mpeg4.

After voting closes on April 19, the top 50 organizations with the most votes will move on to the final judging phase. Around May 8, Seeds of Change® will announce 24 grant recipients: 12 school garden recipients and 12 community garden recipients. Of these grant recipients, (2) two school gardens will receive $25,000, two (2) community gardens will receive $30,000 and ten (10) school gardens and ten (10) community gardens will receive $10,000.
