Editor,

I am writing to you today to let the citizens of Mariposa County and District 3 know about the valuable resource you have in Marshall Long. Marshall was the stagecoach and horseback riding concessionaire at Columbia State Historic Park from 1999 until 2006. He successfully sold his concession to return to Mariposa to run his family's cattle ranch and assist with his parent's healthcare.

While in Columbia, Marshall was involved with many organizations including the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Columbia Area Advisory Council, and Tuolumne Lodge No. 21 of the Independent Order of Odd-Fellows.

As a member of the chamber, Marshall pushed for collective advertising by all of the businesses in Columbia to more effectively and efficiently market Columbia State Historic Park and the concessions and other businesses there. He also led the effort to make the chamber a professional organization, taking it from a collection of local businesses with a like mind to a professional non-profit corporation with a 501(c)3 non-profit status which included hiring a part-time marketing/events coordinator.

Marshall's involvement in the Columbia Area Advisory Council was important as he led the effort to save the American Elm trees that shade the streets of Columbia from the hot summer sun. He also looked out for safety issues around the park to keep visitors safe.

As an Odd-Fellow and member of Tuolumne Lodge No. 21 he was always involved in the monthly pancake breakfast fund raisers and with other members of the Lodge, collected coats and jackets for those in need.

In closing I must state the no matter what Marshall was involved in he always looked for consensus and for the betterment and of Columbia, it's citizens, the community and state park.

Sincerely,

Floyd D.P. Øydegaard
