We have had two wine barrel halves which we planted tomatoes in for many years. This year they did not fair well so removed the plants. Last month my husband was on the back porch and smelled smoke, leading him to think there was a fire in the area somewhere. On further inspection he noticed smoke coming from one of the wine barrels. Rushing down the back stairs to investigate, the wine barrel contents started on fire, which he quickly extinguished. We assume that this was caused by some kind of combustion from all the years of compaction, due to soil, fertilizer and moisture. Needless to say, the wine barrels have been emptied, taken apart and on the burn pile for this years rainy season. We are so thankful that someone was home when this happened, the outcome could of been tragic.
So, to everyone who have wine barrels for planters, be aware!
