An Open Letter to Our Supervisors

Almost 30 years ago, a retired architect and resident of Mariposa County submitted a design for our Government Center to the presiding board of supervisors.  Unfortunately the said resident is no longer with us, but his concept mostly lives on in the form of an excellent center for the County Seat, and one that we can be proud of. 

Now we are faced with another need, this time for Economic Development of Mariposa and redesign of our center of commerce.  I understand a search for an outside consultant will shortly be commenced.  Over the years many such consultants have come and gone, few of their recommendations ever implemented.  Yet we continue to seek outside of our borders for persons lacking ties and intimate knowledge of the wishes of the public and our longsuffering merchant population.  This with little or no thought for the talents that exist within our community, talents that can be tapped at far lesser expense than someone unaccustomed to the small town atmosphere that we the residents would like to preserve while improving its viability. 

Put simply and concisely, we don’t need a “Consultant” we need an Architect.  A person who respects the historic nature of our community and has the expertise to come up with suggestions and ideas that will appeal to a broad segment of our present residents.  I feel sure such persons exist if not within, certainly in reasonable distance.

There is no question of the need for a core attraction with year around appeal to be erected within the boundaries of the town.  There is also no question of the wide variety of talents that presently exist that can and should be recognized.
