An important element of a democracy is that we all have to follow the same rules. Apparently, Mitch McConnell does not believe in that. Eight years ago he sent a letter to then Majority Leader Harry Reid demanding that the evaluation of the president’s nominations be done in an organized, thoughtful way. Now he is rushing Trump’s nominations through without adequate vetting of each candidate. He is using two elements to prevent adequate evaluation of each candidate:

1. Hold committee meetings before committee members have had opportunity to review background checks and material submitted by candidates. That way committee members won’t know what are the critical questions they should ask.

2. Cram numerous candidates through on the same day so that critics can’t focus on the candidates one at a time. Five candidates on Wednesday, June 11, is the same day that Donald Trump holds his long delayed news conference. That means hardly any one is paying attention to any candidate that does poorly at a committee meeting.
