From soap science to robotics to fiber arts, children and adults can create and experiment all summer long at the Mariposa Library as part of their Green S.T.E.A.M. Makerspace program. Makerspace workshops, which have been taking place since last fall, continue every Saturday from July 8 to August 19, 2017.

The fun—which is all free-- begins at 10 a.m. with a themed activity and continues at noon with a free movie and popcorn. Participants are invited to bring a lunch and a blanket (for the movie) and spend the day.

Each activity follows the overall theme of sustainability and incorporates two or more of the components of S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art and math.)

The programs are open to all ages with the exception of Saturday, July 8, which will be divided into separate workshops—one for adults and one for children. The topic of the program will be fall planting and worm composting. Adults will learn about the Library’s seed library and then choose seeds to plant their seeds to take home for fall gardens. They will also be given tips on improving soil, efficient watering systems, container gardening and worm composting methods.

In the children’s room, the younger set will learn about seeds, soil and worms, planting seeds for a seed race, learning about soil properties by conducting water percolation and other experiments and getting their hands dirty discovering the amazing earthworm.

The movie for the day, Saturday, July 8, will be Finding Dory.

The schedule for activities and movies for the remaining six weeks is as follows:

·         July 15 - Soap Science (bubble engineering, soap powered boats, bath fizzies) & Moana

·         July 22 - Paper play (recycled paper & papier mache) & The Good Dinosaur

·         July 29 - Robotics (make and race a solar powered robot—prizes to winners) & Wall-E

·         August 5 - Food Science (milk clay, color changing slime, cornstarch goo) & Oddball

·         August 12 - Fun with Fiber (Rag weaving & crochet) & Sing

·         August 19 - Recycled toys (CD tops, videotape wands & more) & Trolls

Space is limited and registration is required. Register at the Library or call 209-966-2140 during regular Library hours.
