The Oakhurst Library is pleased to host a discussion regarding birds to be presented by Audubon member, John K. Cross.  The title of his appearance is “Birds at our Beak and Caw”. John will speak to the public on Saturday, August 9th, at 10:30 a.m. in the Oakhurst Library Community Room.

John is an avid birdwatcher and would like to share his enthusiasm with an audience of beginners and other experienced “collectors”. His topics will describe the various ways that birds are found, identified and cataloged by avid watchers.  But, he will also discuss game farms, illegal trading in exotic birds and ways to keep squirrels away from bird feeders.

John says that birdwatchers use their eyes and ears to identify birds and he will introduce several books which assist them in adding the proper names to their “collection” lists. John will also talk about birds in other states and other continents as well as special trips that enthusiasts can take to find those birds not native to our mountains.  John will discuss a wide range of these dinosaur descendents including dodos, emus, ostriches, owls and geese.

Another interesting topic is how collecting stamps can be used to expand watchers’ lists and how enthusiasts can arrange their collection into topical and thematic collections.

John holds a doctorate in Biology from the University of Arizona and taught in the Alternative Education department of the Yosemite School District two decades.  He has been a member of the Yosemite Area Audubon Society for more than two years. And, he regrets he didn’t join sooner.

If you have any questions about this special presentation, please call the Library at 559-683-4838.
