September 11, 2017 - During the final day of the Mariposa County Arts Council’s Summer Art Camp Academy, camp kids used their creative potential to give back to Detwiler Fire victims in an unexpected way.

The Arts Council’s Summer Art Camp, a multi-week academy partnership program with the Mariposa County Department of Parks and Recreation, offers deep, hands-on arts programming, provided by the region’s best visual and performing arts instructors. This year, teaching artists Bryan Starchman, Moira Donohoe, and Adams Burns led theatre, painting, and music workshops for summer camp participants.
Summer Art Camp Burns of Bootstrap Circus and The Beat Harvest, instructed the music workshop for the final two weeks of camp. Learning music theory, instrument playing, singing, and music writing, summer camp kids recorded their own original song, "What's Waiting For Me?" as a final product. The children wrote their own lyrics, sang the song, and played hand-made recycled musical instruments from trash, supported by Burn’s melody and arrangements. The song speaks of the possibilities of summer, with memorable lyrics like,

“Breathing in the cool fresh air

When will I get to go to the fair?

You never know what in the world you’ll find

Is that a potato? Wait, never mind.”

“We joked all week about how the song was going to make us millionaires! On the last day, I asked them what they thought about selling the song to help fire victims and they fell in love with the idea.” said Burns.

All profits from the sale of “What’s Waiting For Me?” will be donated to the Mariposa Community Foundation. The song can be listened to for free, or downloaded and purchased for one dollar at the BeatHarvest.com.
