The Empire Fire is a naturally ignited wildfire being managed in Yosemite National Park to reduce fuels, reduce the intensity of future wildfires, and ensure healthier, more diverse ecosystem functions.

October 17, 2017 - Last week and this week women and men from across the United States, Canada, and Australia are gathering for the 2nd annual Women-in Fire Training Exchange in our nearby community of Mariposa, CA.

Fire personnel with diverse backgrounds and a wide range of fire qualifications will serve in qualified and trainee firefighting positions on wildland fires in and around Yosemite.

The group will work with a variety of local hosts including National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service-Stanislaus National Forest, and CAL FIRE.

One of the primary goals of this exchange is to connect women who work in the field of fire, provide quality training, mentoring, and networking opportunities.

This week the group will continue working with Yosemite Fire crews.  In the park you might see a high percentage of women firefighters from various federal, state and other non-profit agencies assisting the park with fire management activities. 

Currently only 10% of wildland fire positions are filled by women.
