10 28 17 Oakhurst Library

October 19, 2017 - The ancient art of folding paper into various shapes called “origami” will return to the Oakhurst Branch Library this year at a special workshop where Carla Hyatt of Bakersfield will teach participants to make an origami Christmas wreath and Santa Claus.

The free workshop is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at the library located at 49044 Civic Circle Dr., Oakhurst.

Hyatt, the sister of Oakhurst Library Branch Manager Dale Rushing, has presented themed origami workshops in past years at the library and they have always “been a hit” with local participants, said Rushing.

A retired junior high school math teacher, Hyatt used origami in her classes as a way to teach important math concepts like fractions and geometry to her students.

“An important result of using origami to teach math was that students learned to pay attention and follow directions while experiencing the hands-on process of doing something themselves. Now I do it because it’s fun,” she said.

The event is open to all ages; however, Hyatt does not recommend the project for children under 10. All supplies for the project will be provided.

The workshop, sponsored by the Friends of the Oakhurst Library, will be held in the library’s Community Room. For more information, call the library at (559) 683-4838 or visit oakhurstfobl.com.

North Fork Library Workshop

Hyatt will present the same workshop later in the day (Saturday, October 28) at the North Fork Library from 1:30 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.

The library is located at 32908 Road 222 and the phone number is (559) 877-2387.
