October 20, 2017 - As wildfires continue to burn throughout Northern California, AAA is offering advice to help motorists stay safe and protect their vehicles from the harmful ash that's settled on neighborhoods across the state.

aaa northern california logo“Our hearts are with all residents in Northern California who have been devastated by these persisting wildfires," said John Moreno, Manager of Public Affairs for AAA Northern California.  "Even people not in immediate danger from the fires are feeling the effects of poor air quality from smoke and falling ash and soot, which can be very unhealthy to breathe and can damage property."

AAA recommends everyone follow the safety advice from local authorities. Anyone needing masks, food, water or shelter is encouraged to visit their local AAA branch for supplies. If you need to file an insurance claim, visit a branch or call 800-922-8228.

For motorists worried about protecting their vehicle from longterm effects of falling ash and soot, it's helpful to remember these tips:

AAA Tips on Ash Removal
  • Ash is not like regular dirt. It's gritty and abrasive. Make sure you don't let ash sit on your car for too long, and when you do begin to wipe the ash away, use a soft cloth or a duster. Don't forget to wipe down the windshield wipers, too.

  • For big jobs, rinse with water first. If you have too much ash to simply dust away, AAA recommends rinsing your vehicle and then washing thoroughly with soap. Begin at the roof and work your way down. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth.

  • Inspect and replace. Have an auto repair shop examine your vehicle, especially to determine if your air filter needs to be changed. If you haven't changed your wiper blades in a few months, now is a great time to replace them.

  • Inside and outside. It's important to vacuum the floor mats and cloth surfaces. Wear a mask. When the smoke clears and the car dries, apply a new coat of wax.

"AAA is ready to put the full weight of our organization behind the recovery efforts in the months ahead," Moreno said. "We have donated food, water, and batteries to to people and organizations in the region, and we'll do whatever else it takes to help the half-million AAA members living in these communities and their neighbors get through these tough times."
