November 17, 2017 - The Mariposa County Arts Council annually presents a $500 cash award to a graduating high school senior who has demonstrated a strong commitment to the arts – visual, performance, or media arts – either through the Arts Council’s programs or other arts involvement in the community.  The Mariposa County Arts Council is proud to present the award this year to Elinor Phillips, a 2017 high school graduate and daughter of Laura Phillips.

Ellie and Cara Arts Council Executive Director, Cara Goger, presents Elinor Phillips with her check for $500

Elinor has volunteered on the Storytelling Festival, supervised elementary school-age children during the summer art day camp, and assisted teachers in the after school art classes; all three programs sponsored all or in part by the Mariposa County Arts Council.  Elinor also volunteered with 2MC Productions, a local video production company since 2016.  In addition, Elinor performed on-stage in the ’24 Hour Plays’ hosted by Mariposa Crisis Services in 2016.  Elinor has twice attended the prestigious California State Summer School for the Arts; in 2015 in the Creative Writing department and in 2016 with the Film and Video department.

While living in Mariposa and attending school, Elinor developed her skills and her passion for filmmaking and the powerful way film can tell the stories of our past or expose conditions of our present-day society.  Starting this fall, Elinor plans to attend Bennington College in Vermont, majoring in Film Production.  In her written application, Elinor stated, “after college I hope to produce independent films that are artistically significant and address the social issues facing my country, as well as my community.”

The Mariposa County Arts Council Board of Directors was very impressed with Elinor, her accomplishments thus far, and the contributions to both our programs and the community at large.  The Mariposa County Arts Council was proud to offer this award to Elinor Phillips and we are eager to see what the future holds for this thoughtful, articulate, and talented young woman.

The MARIPOSA COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL, INC. is an incorporated not-for-profit organization, created to promote and support all forms of the cultural arts, for all ages, throughout Mariposa County.
