January 12, 2018 - Washington, D.C. — On Wednesday, the Republican Main Street Caucus, a group of 76 members committed to pragmatic, conservative governing, agreed to key principles they would like to see included in legislative solutions jeff denham officialaddressing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. At a minimum, members would like to see these principles included: a permanent legislative solution for DACA recipients, increased border security measures, and reforms to address the backlog of immigration cases in our courts.

“This week, President Trump provided leadership on a difficult issue that our nation has faced for decades and Main Street members want to help the president address our broken immigration system,” said U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.), Chairman of the Republican Main Street Caucus. “We are committed to providing certainty to DACA recipients, but also ensuring our country is not faced with this same immigration crisis 20 years from now. Like the president’s meeting with congressional leaders demonstrated, there are many different ideas on how we get there, but our members are committed to working with leadership to fix the problem – beginning with a solution that includes DACA, increased border security, and reducing the backlog in our immigration courts.”

“Time is running out to pass a permanent legislative solution for DACA recipients,” said U.S. Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Calif.), Co-chair of the Republican Main Street Caucus. “We cannot get there without addressing the need for more security along the border as well as addressing the current backlog. I personally have long advocated for top to bottom reform and will continue to push my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to come to the table on immigration reform.”

At a minimum, the following are key principles Main Street members have said need to be included in legislative solutions addressing DACA:

• Provide a long-term permanent legislative solution for persons with protection under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
• Provide reasonable, practical, cost-effective measures to boost security along the southern U.S. border to help prevent the flow of future undocumented populations and combat the trafficking of persons and illegal goods and narcotics harmful to American citizens.
• Provide for reforms and resources to address the current backlog and management in the federal immigration court system.
