October 24, 2014- SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today issued the following statement regarding the deaths of Sacramento County Sheriff's Department Deputy Daniel Oliver and Placer County Sheriff’s Office Detective Michael David Davis Jr., who were killed in the line of duty today in the Sacramento region:

“The brutal murders of Sheriff’s Deputy Danny Oliver and Sheriff's Detective Michael Davis are a tragic reminder of the sacrifices we demand of our peace officers and the incredible courage they display as they protect our communities. Anne and I extend our deepest sympathies to the families, friends and colleagues of these two brave public servants. We also are mindful of the officer and bystanders who were wounded or terrorized by today’s terrible events.”

Deputy Oliver, 47, was fatally shot today when approaching a suspicious vehicle in Sacramento County. He was a 15-year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department and is survived by his wife and two children.

Detective Davis, 42, was fatally shot today in connection with the earlier incident. He first came to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office as a reserve deputy sheriff in 1996. Detective Davis then became a police officer for the Auburn Police Department in 1996 and returned to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office in 1999. He is survived by his wife and four children.
