bigelow frog jump
Assemblyman Frank Bigelow

May 17, 2018 - SACRAMENTO – On Wednesday, Assemblyman Frank Bigelow (R-O’Neals) and Senator Tom Berryhill (R-Modesto) hosted the 44th annual Capitol Frog Jump at the East Lawn of the State Capitol. Legislators, staffers and members of the media competed for the longest jump to promote the 90th anniversary of the Jumping Frog Jubilee at the Calaveras County Fair.

“The frog jumping competition was fierce this year,” said Assemblyman Bigelow. "The annual event is a great way to bring the Capitol community together to highlight the rich history behind the Calaveras County Frog Jumping Jubilee.”

“This is a fantastic event that highlights a truly unique California tradition. Members, staff and the press corps all look forward to this event and it’s a great way to showcase Calaveras County,” added Berryhill.

While the contestants didn’t come close to upending the world record jump of 21-feet and 5 ¾ -inches, the first place jump went to a legislative staffer from Senator Joel Anderson’s (R-San Diego) office. Lea Park-Kim and her frog, “Mr. Jeremy Fisher,” took home the first place trophy with an 8-foot and ½-inch jump. From the media competition, Taylor Maurits from the Capitol Morning Report topped the rest of the Capitol Press Corps with a recorded 7-foot and 8 ½-inch jump. Leaping in at last place was Luis Larios from Assemblyman Mike Gipson’s (D-Carson) office. His frog, “Valentina”, only managed a meager 4-feet and 3-inches.

The Calaveras County Fair will hop into action Thursday, May 17. More information about the event can be found at www.frogtown.org.
