August 9, 2018 - U.S. Representative Jeff Denham (R-CA) on Tuesday concluded a multi-day visit to California’s border with Mexico, including visits to a detention center, port of entry, U.S. Border Patrol station, U.S. Naval Air Station and tunnel site. The denham bordertrip also included a review of current border infrastructure and border wall prototypes.

“It’s critical members of congress visit the border and see the problems and restrictions that law enforcement is facing due to our outdated immigration laws.” said Rep. Denham. “Congress must take action to secure our border, keep families together, and pass a permanent solution for America’s Dreamers – and we have to act now."

The Congressional Delegation, which included Representatives Rodney Davis (R-IL) and David Valadao (R-CA), toured the Otay Mesa Detention Center, observed enforcement operations and seizures at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, discussed potential threats to our Border Infrastructure System (BIS), and received multiple briefings from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) officials on border technology, canine utilization, and inspection procedures.

Rep. Denham has been on the frontlines of the immigration debate in Congress, pushing for bipartisan legislation to improve border security and secure a permanent solution for America’s Dreamers. He also authored language in the immigration consensus bill to put an end to family separation under the administration’s zero tolerance policy.

Rep. Denham introduced a queen-of-the-hill rule to force a vote on four separate immigration bills from across the political spectrum – three of which have now been voted on in Congress, including the Dream Act which was brought up and failed previously at a time when Democrats had control of both chambers of congress and the presidency. As a result of the discharge petition on Rep. Denham’s rule, the Goodlatte Bill and a bill crafted by Republican leadership were also brought up for a vote. This leaves one remaining solution – a bipartisan bill with the narrow focus of providing a permanent pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and border security to stop the flow of illegal immigrants, drugs, and human trafficking over our southern border.
