Wednesday Evening Information

Engines: 135 Water Tenders: 18 Helicopters: 14 Crews: 22 Dozers: 23 Masticators: 5 Total Personnel: 1,889

August 8, 2018 - Containment has reached 68 percent and progress has been made in critical areas on the fire today. Containment indicates that the fire line will hold under typical conditions. The fully contained lines are being monitored and patrolled. Suppression repair will continue as suppression equipment vacates the fire line. Due to the exceptional work of firefighters, the only uncontained lines are from Montgomery Gulch to Pilot Peak and from the tunnel on Big Oak Road to Chinquapin.

The uncontained lines continue to be the focus of firefighting efforts. A critical area of the fire is burning towards Grouse Creek drainage from El Portal Road to Wawona Road. Helicopters were used today to slow the fire’s progress to allow firefighting resources to reposition their efforts and build containment lines along Wawona Road and Glaciar point road. This hand line is intended to prevent the fire from becoming established in the drainage and spreading across Wawona Road and farther into the Park. Firefighters have also been focusing on the portion of the fire that burned across Wawona Road on both sides of Glacier Point Road on Friday August 3. On the souths side of Glacier Point Road, crews utilized a service road to construct containment line from Wawona Road to Badger Pass and on the north side of Glacier Point crews are constructing direct hand line along the fires edge from Wawona Road to Badger Pass. When completed, these hand lines will secure this area of the fire. Crews also continue to mop-up or extinguish hot spots along Montgomery Ridge to Pilot Peak in Anderson Valley.

The burning operation from last night above the tunnel on Big Oak Flats is meeting firefighter’s objectives by reducing the fuel in front of the main fire and securing the north rim and the Valley. This finger of the fire effects all the major roads entering Yosemite Valley; Big Oak Flats Road, El Portal Road and Wawona Road.

Evacuated residents who were affected by the fire are beginning to return home and communities in the area are open for business. Smoke will continue to be prevalent in the area for air quality information visit: Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program for the Yosemite area and Southern Sierra area.
