December 17, 2014 - Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement today after the release of Alan Gross, an American aid Barbara-Boxerworker imprisoned in Cuba, and President Obama’s announcement on U.S. relations with Cuba:“After five long years, the release of Alan Gross is a joyous moment for his family, his friends and all Americans who have worked and prayed for this day.

“Today opens a new chapter in U.S.-Cuba relations that rejects the failed policies of the past and embraces a new future that will better serve America’s interests and improve the lives of Cubans and their families.

“As I learned during a trip I made to Cuba in 2002 with the agricultural community from California, we will have enormous economic opportunities because of this action. There will be many other benefits as well and that is why I fully support this breakthrough.”
Feinstein Statement on Cuba
Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on Cuba:

“The release of Alan Gross from a Cuban prison is wonderful news for his family and our country. Alan was held for five years and is in poor health, and I’m pleased he will spend the holidays at home.

“This is also good news for our two nations. For too long our relationship has been soured by mistrust and clouded by memories of the Cold War. Reports that our countries will move to normalize relations are very welcome. Reconciling our differences, opening embassies, increasing trade and building people-to-people relationships are all long overdue.

“It is my hope that normalizing relations will spur positive changes for the people of Cuba. Today is a historic day, and I am looking forward to a brighter future with our Caribbean neighbor.”
