Mariposa Rotary has a wonderful program in which they give every third grader in Mariposa County public schools a beautifully illustrated, four color MacMillan Dictionary for Children. The dictionaries include each child's name entered on a Four-Way Test bookplate.

The Four-Way Test of thins we think, say or do: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

And rather than just delivering the dictionaries to schools for teachers to give out, Rotarians make the trip to the school, hand each child his or her dictionary, and then spends some time going through the dictionaries with the third graders, asking them to find particular entries and read them out loud, pointing out special features and so on.

It's a very special program and students love it.
SFCS-1Here, Rotarians Kris Casto, Harald Suzmann, and Marilyn Saunders stand with Sierra Foothill Charter School teacher Teena Starchman and her class of third graders.
SFCS-2Rotarian Kris Casto hands a dictionary to third grader Cole Silva. This book has Cole's name in it; Rotarians take the time to find out the names of all third graders and pre-print their names on the bookplates inside the front cover.  This is a thoughtful, extra touch.
SFCS-3Casto shows Fallon Butler her name printed inside the book.
SFCS-4Conner Eastwood and Aiden Pierson start taking a look inside.
SFCS-5Khalil Neogy and Cole Silva examine their new dictionaries. Students love these fully illustrated, four color dictionaries, and they use them again and again in the classroom throughout the school year.
