Jonah-DacanayJonah Dacanay of the Sounds of Music Studio in Mariposa will be giving his first solo piano concert “Jonah’s Piano Concert” for friends, family, and the community of Mariposa on Sunday, March 8th, 2015.The concert begins at 3:00 p.m. at the Mariposa Lutheran Church.  Reception to follow. The concert is free and open to the public (Note: March 8th is daylight savings).

Dacanay, 11 years old, has been playing piano with music teacher Gail Vanderslik of the Sounds of Music Studio since age three.  At this age, he performed his first song, Mozart’s “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.”

"Jonah Dacanay is the first student of the Sounds of Music Studio to give a solo piano concert," said Gail Vanderslik, founder and music teacher of the Sounds of Music Studio. "I feel it is important for young musicians to have these musical opportunities to further develop their talent, focus, and confidence when they perform. In addition, I feel it is important to share their talents with the community. I plan to work with my other students on solo performances."

Dacanay will perform a repertoire of songs that he has performed through the years at Sounds of Music Studio recitals, community events, and fundraisers. The songs include compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, M. Clementi, Frederic Chopin, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Johannes Brahms, John W. Schaum, and John Williams. Dacanay has performed these works and others for the Mariposa Rotary Club, at the MCHS Grizzly Band Music Marathon, and at the Sierra Foothill Charter School’s Bands for the Band Music Fest.

JonahPianoConcertDacanay showed an interest in music at a very early age.  He began playing kid friendly songs such as “Thomas The Tank Engine” and “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” on the piano with his mother and also enjoyed Vanderslik’s Kindermusik classes at the Acorn Cooperative Preschool before starting music lessons.

Dacanay plays a variety of instruments in addition to piano.  As a toddler, he learned and performed Beatles songs on the chimes.

Dacanay also plays guitar, both acoustic and electric, which he started with Vanderslik at age 5. Dacanay continues to play guitar with his father Roger Dacanay and Adam Burns of Bootstrap Circus. He recently rocked his electric guitar skills at Burns’ Beat Harvest Autumn Student Show at the Yosemite Bug Mountain Resort in the Fall 2014.  Dacanay will perform on his electric guitar at the upcoming Woodland Elementary School talent show on March 6 and the Spring Beat Harvest Student Show on Saturday, April 18th at the Yosemite Bug Mountain Resort.

Currently a fifth grade student at Woodland Elementary School, Dacanay plays the flute in the advanced band under the direction of Rod Fiester and performs in the Spring and Fall band concerts. He will perform with the Woodland and MES advanced bands at the Regional Arts Summit at the Fresno Convention Center on Friday, March 6th.

Outside of school band and music lessons, Dacanay enjoyed summer music camps over the years at the Sounds of Music Studio and Camp Jam, a rock camp in the bay area.  At Camp Jam, Dacanay had a chance to work and perform with young bay area musicians and also had a chance to meet and work with guest musicians including Phil Bennett, keyboardist and vocalist for Starship (formerly Jefferson Starship) and Carl Verheyen, guitarist of Supertramp.  In addition to playing music, Dacanay enjoys listening to all types of live music, whether it is the symphony, the orchestra, or a concert, especially a rock concert.
