Wildland Fire near Mariposa in 2008
April 21, 2015 - MARIPOSA: The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit (MMU) has announced effective Monday, April 27, 2015, burn permits will be required for all hazard reduction burning in the State Responsibility Area (SRA) of Mariposa County.
Burning 4 x 4 piles of brush, leaves, pine needles or other dry vegetation for hazard reduction are currently permitted in Mariposa County with a valid permit on “Permissive Burn Days”. Permit holders continue to be responsible for following the regulations stated on their permits as well as calling the Burn Day Information Line at 209-966-1200 before burning.
Permits may be obtained at your closest CAL FIRE station during normal business hours.
Unit Chief Nancy Koerperich would like to remind all Mariposa County residents that now is the time to work on 100 foot defensible space around your home. Remember an adult must be in attendance until the fire is out, keep a water supply close to the burning site, clear all flammable material and vegetation within 10 feet of the outer edge of the pile, and do not burn during days that have, or are forecasted to have, high winds. Do not burn household or commercial trash, tires, plastic or other garbage. Burn living or natural forms of vegetation growing and originating from that property only. By following a few simple steps, homeowners can drastically increase the survivability of their home during a wildfire.
