On Friday, April 24, 2015 the student body at Mariposa County High School will experience the DUI Court in Schools Program which is designed to teach students the consequences of driving while under the influence of alcohol. The school assembly will begin at 9 am, in the schools auditorium and last for approximately one hr for each sentencing. Their will be a sentencing for the Seniors and Junior classes to witness, followed by an assembly for the Sophomore and Freshman classes.

Convening the sentencing of a DUI case at Mariposa County High School will allow students to see a criminal court proceeding and learn about the serious dangers and consequences associated with DUI. The school auditorium will be converted into a court room and will include the services of a Mariposa County judge, bailiff, prosecutor, and defense attorney. The proceeding will benefit the entire school to help decrease the number of students drinking and driving near the end of the school year activities. The Honorable Michael Fagalde Judge of the Superior Court of Mariposa County, District Attorney Devan Portillo, Public Defender Wayne Green, Mariposa County Sheriff Doug Binnewies, Lieutenant Becky Hagen, and a representative of Mercy Ambulance will also speak to the students about DUI laws involving underage drinking, as well as driving under the influence of prescription drugs, marijuana, and other drugs. Students will have the opportunity at lunch that day to sign “Casey’s Pledge,” which is a pledge to never drink and drive in honor of Casey Goodwin a young woman passionate against drinking and driving who lost her life from a drunk driver.

This program is presented in coordination with Mariposa County FNL, Mariposa Safe Families, Mariposa County Sheriffs Office, Mariposa County District Attorneys Office, Mariposa County Public Defenders, California Highway Patrol, Mercy Ambulance, Mariposa County High School, California Friday Night Live  and the Superior Court of Mariposa County.
