April 24, 2015- Governor Jerry Brown has proclaimed April 24 as a Day of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide. The California Legislature acknowledged the genocide this past Monday with floor presentations during both the Senate and Assembly sessions. In addition, the Armenian Caucus hosted a gathering on the steps of the Capitol as well as an exhibit at the California Museum.

I wanted to share Monday’s legislative events with you as the Fresno area has the second largest Armenian population in California. Many of us are fortunate to have Armenian American friends, neighbors and colleagues. Below is a short video highlighting the recognition ceremonies at the Capitol. If you would like to participate in any of our local commemoration activities this weekend, they are listed below. My District Director, MaryAlice Kaloostian has the honor of being asked to speak at the April 24th Annual Flag Raising on the steps of Fresno City Hall. I know she will do a wonderful job.

  • April 23, 2015: Genocide Remembrance at the Charlie Keyan Armenian Community School (108 N. Villa Ave., Clovis), 2:00pm.
  • April 23, 2015: Requiem Service at the Memorial of the Unknown Martyr in the Ararat Cemetery (1925 W. Belmont, Fresno), 5:00pm.
  • April 23, 2015: Unveiling of the Armenian Genocide Monument in the Maple Mall at Fresno State. 7:30 pm. Public is Welcome.
  • April 24, 2015: Annual Flag Raising on the steps of Fresno City Hall (2600 Fresno Street, Fresno), Organized by the Armenian National Committee of American (www.anca.org).
  • April 24, 2015: Traditional Community Commemoration at St. Paul Armenian Church (3767 N. First St., Fresno), featuring Bruce Janigian of the American University of Armenia. Overflow seating with televised viewing available at Pilgrim Armenian Congregational Church (3673 N. First Street, Fresno). 7:00 pm.
  • April 24, 2015: World Moment of Silence at 19:15 (7:15pm).
  • April 25, 2015: I Remember-I Demand, a pre-concert reception and dinner at the Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church (2226 Ventura Avenue, Fresno; map) at 5:00pm. Organized by Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church and the Armenian Museum of Fresno (www.armof.org)
  • April 25, 2015: Witness & Rebirth: An Armenian Journey, a Fresno Philharmonic concert commemorating the Armenian Genocide at Saroyan Theater (848 M Street, Fresno) featuring Theodire Kuchar, conductor; Catherine Manukian, violin; Isabel Bayrakdarian, mezzo-soprano; Eugene Beancoveanu, baritone; Fresno Master Chorale; and the Fresno State Concert Choir with director Anna Hamre.
