December 8, 2022 - STOCKTON – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) wants to remind motorists to be prepared for heavy winter storms in the valley, foothills, and mountains beginning today into this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, moderate snow is forecast above 3,500 feet today (December 8) into early Friday. A stronger system is expected to bring Valley rain, heavy mountain snow, and whiteout conditions that will make mountain travel nearly impossible late Friday into Sunday.

Be sure to plan ahead, if you have mountain travel plans. Be prepared for snow covered roads, travel delays and chain controls.

Better travel conditions are expected Monday.

Caltrans snow removal and winter roadway operations will continue around the clock. Motorists are instructed to keep a safe distance between their vehicle and Caltrans equipment and only pass when the whole roadway ahead is visible. These and other winter driving tips can be found at dot.ca.gov/travel/winter-driving-tips.

Check with Caltrans frequently for the latest road conditions, restrictions, and closures by visiting quickmap.dot.ca.gov or call 1-800-427-7623 (ROAD). You can download the Quickmap app to your smart phone, now with push notifications, so you #KnowBeforeYouGo and as you go!
