Mariposa Democratic Club September Meeting – Birds!

The Mariposa Democratic Club is happy to announce that Lowell Young, our Assembly District Democratic rep and birder extraordinaire, will be discussing his work on the TriColored Blackbird team at our meeting on Saturday, September 12, at Miner’s Roadhouse – 9:00 a.m. to purchase breakfast, 9:45 a.m. for meeting.

In 2013, he received National Audubon's Callison award as the citizen volunteer of the year and in 2014, he received the Point Blue Conservation Science's award for citizen scientist of the year. This year, he organized an effort to save California tricolored blackbirds from extinction. The program is known as the Audubon California Chapters Tricolored Blackbird Action Team. It is now a state wide program and is being backed by Audubon California.

His program in September will be about the genesis of the Audubon California Tricolored Blackbird Team. The survey team began about 11 years ago; four years ago, the team finally found the first colony of Tricolored Blackbirds they had ever seen in the survey area during the survey period. There were at least 60,000 of them; what happened to that colony of birds and several other events during that time will be the subject of his presentation.

The Mariposa Democratic Club meets the second Saturday of most months at Miner’s Roadhouse Restaurant. Join us at 9:00 a.m. if you want to purchase breakfast or at 9:45 a.m. for the speaker and meeting. Call 209-742-1010 if you have any questions.
