Whether it’s natural climate change or global warming, life in the foothills has been impacted daily by fires and drought. The Mariposa AAUW (American Association of University Women) is hosting “Fire and Ice,” an informative program offering the community a chance to hear and talk with environmental experts from UC Merced on Thursday, September 11th at 7:00 p.m. at the Miner’s Roadhouse 140.

The event is free and open to the public.

The presenters, Dr. Anthony LeRoy Westerling, Associate Professor, Environmental Engineering and Geography, UC Merced; and Dr. Robert Rice, Sierra Nevada Institute, UC Merced, will give informal presentations on Climate-Ecosystem-Wildfire Interactions and Snow Science and Mountain Hydrology followed by a question and answer exchange.

This event is part of the “Cap and Town” series offered by AAUW’s Mariposa branch to provide community members a forum to talk with experts on timely issues.

Founded in 1881, AAUW is a national organization dedicated to lifelong learning and advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. The Mariposa branch has nearly 100 members who support projects such as Tech Trek, a weeklong science camp for girls, Speech Trek, a thought-provoking speech contest and Dinner with a Scientist, an evening at UC Merced for girls interested in scientific careers.
