July 25, 2014 - On Thursday, June 19th, Yosemite National Park hosted a group of military veterans from the Warrior Hike “Walk off the War” program – a non-profit initiative that supports veterans in their transition from wartime experience by thru-hiking America’s long distance trails as a form of outdoor therapy.

On this hike, four combat veterans arrived in Tuolumne Meadows in the northern portion of the park to rest and resupply during their challenge to hike the entire Pacific Crest Trail.  The trail is 2,663 miles long and passes through 25 national forests and seven national parks.

Upon their arrival, the park’s military veteran employees, members of the Mariposa Chapter of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and local resident Hal Mayo, a 92-year-old Navy veteran and one of the few living Pearl Harbor survivors, welcomed the group, provided them a barbeque dinner, and held a “meet and greet” session.

In recognition of the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of long distance hiking, Warrior Hike has partnered with the federal and non-profit organizations that manage the Appalachian Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and the Pacific Crest Trail to create the “Walk off the War” program.  The program is specifically designed to support combat veterans transitioning from their military service by thru-hiking America’s National Scenic Trails.

Yosemite National Park has an active special emphasis program for veterans of the armed services.  The park’s program is managed by Dave Henderson, a disabled U.S. Army veteran who also manages the park’s traffic program.  Henderson is a long-time Yosemite National Park employee and has done exceptional work managing traffic and visitor services throughout Yosemite.

The park currently employs approximately 100 veterans, representing all divisions within the park.  These employees represent all military branches who have served in all recent conflicts ranging from the Korean War, the Cold War, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Yosemite continues to remain committed to America’s veterans through employment programs and initiatives designed to assist America’s veterans.
