In past years, Sierra Foothill Charter School used curriculum called Character Counts! to help instill in students the importance of what that program identified as the six pillars of character. To keep things fresh, this year, SFCS has adopted a new program called Core Virtues.

Making use of the Core Virtues curriculum, teachers work with students throughout the months to highlight key intellectual, moral and civic virtues. At the end of each month, there is a school wide assembly to celebrate the month's topic and the students who show by stellar example what those virtues are all about.

From the start of the school year, staff has been working with students on the meanings of the Core Virtues of Respect and Responsibility. Last Friday, a number of students were recognized at an assembly for being stellar role models of these virtues.
SFCS 0320Congratulations to Samantha Stevens, Wyndham Evans, Kai Yoshida, Daisy Salonen, Khalil Neogy, Bianca Rios, Annalee Blagg, Zayden Land, (not pictured) Christine Bittis, Jane Adcock, and Mason Sinclair.

Also at Friday's assembly, American Legion volunteers Al Handy and Ken Wagner took time to talk to students about how to be respectful and act responsibly when it comes to the American flag.

Mr. Handy and Mr. Wagner went through illustrated magazines that they had brought with them, discussing the history of the flag, proper ways of displaying the flag, disposing of worn and tattered flags, and how to behave in the presence of the flag. It was wonderful information. Even some of the adults in the audience learned a thing or two!

SFCS 0315Students enjoyed following along in the magazine as Mr. Handy spoke about the flag. Even some of the adults in the audience learned something new.

It was a very worthwhile presentation that tied in well to the Core Virtues of Respect and Responsibility.

During October, teachers and students will be focusing on the virtue of Diligence.
