Updated at 12:11 P.M. The deceased Mariposa resident has been identified as Steven Thompson. He recently retired as a biologist from Yosemite National Park.

August 27, 2014 - On Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at 4:25 P.M. a 63 year old Mariposa man was driving a 1998 Nissan south on Highway 49 at a high rate of speed just south of Third Street. 

The vehicle left the roadway crossing the dirt shoulder and rolled several times before it came to rest across Mariposa Creek.  The man sustained fatal injuries due to the accident. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the collision. 

The decedents name was not released pending notification of family.

Officer S. Lewis is investigating this accident until its conclusion.
