February 3, 2016 - PARENTS! Are your kids using an app called After School on their smartphones? The Mariposa County Sheriff's Office has received information regarding this app and the use of it by students in our local high
school. The app claims to give students the ability to anonymously post things, funny anonymous school news for confessions and compliments.After reviewing the app it is clear that students are using it for much for than that. Cyber bullying, sexting, and negative content fill the pages.
In order for students to open more areas of the app students are required to take a photo of the barcode of their California Drivers License or ID card. The information contained in the barcode is everything shown on the front of the card : Name, Address, DL Number, Signature, Photo, Height, Weight, Sex, Class, Expiration Date, Birth date, Eye Color, Hair Color. In the age of identity theft this is very concerning. The Sheriff’s office as always warns against giving this type of information out to anyone.
According to the app privacy statement posted on their website they do keep track of the info on the students phone number, email or Facebook and the Sheriff’s Office and or other authorities can request that info for instances of cyber bullying etc. The Mariposa County High School will be requesting identity information for posts violating Ed code.
Parents please warn your children to use this app with caution.
