SFCS career lunchThe Mariposa Academic Boosters Club's monthly Career Lunch series was motivated by student feedback requesting presentations from individuals employed in a variety of fields. It continues to be a great success. On Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016 local small animal veterinarian Angelina Brouillette spoke to 27 students about the path she took to becoming a vet and practicing in Mariposa with Dr. Ritter. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, students enjoyed free sandwiches (this month from High County Cafe) while listening and asking questions.

Dr. Brouillette earned a BS in Biology from Dominican University of San Rafael. She took time off school, working as a small animal technician for a year and riding along with an equine vet for a year, to make sure it was the field she wanted to pursue before going on to invest time and money in receiving her DVM degree from UC Davis in 2003. In addition to talking about a typical day, interesting animals and cases, Dr. Brouillette spoke about the pre-reqs required for vet school, the cost, and starting salary ranges. Did you know there are only 30 veterinarian schools in all of the United States compared to 172 medical schools? Competition to get in is fierce and costs have skyrocketed in recent years. Students and teachers alike were interested to learn about what it takes to become and work as a veterinarian.

ABC thanks Dr. Brouillette for her time and expertise, ABC member Jill Harry for organizing this month's event, and ABC members who helped the day of.

Career lunches happen the first Wednesday of most every month. The speaker for March is Dr. Gara Villalba, a visiting scholar at the School of Engineer, UC Merced from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. As a chemical engineer, Dr. Villalba works with agricultural scientists, architects, and designers to develop and evaluate self-sufficient buildings in order to make our cities more sustainable. She will talk to students about the importance of being able to communicate and work with other disciplines of study, discussing several student projects aimed at making cities more resilient (and what these students are doing after they graduate).
