May 1, 2016 - (Sacramento) – Assemblymember Adam C. Gray (D-Merced) announced on Thursday that the Assembly Agriculture Committee passed his state fair funding bill with unanimous bipartisan support. AB 2678 would gray adam california assemblymember mercedgenerate $14-16 million in annual funding for reinvestment back into California's network of 77 fairs.

“State and local fairs are one of the few public entities that do not receive state funding, even though they are major economic engines and create a significant number of jobs in their communities,” said Gray. “We eliminated funding to fairs during the economic downturn. With the state’s healthy financial forecast, the time is right to make this modest, but significant, investment back into the fairs.”

Gray placed particular emphasis on the value of fairs that serve rural communities like those in Merced and Stanislaus County.

“More than 12 million Californians attend their hometown fair each year, creating jobs, generating tax income, and building community pride throughout the state,” continued Gray. “This bill will provide a stable and reliable source of funding especially to fairgrounds that serve small rural communities like in my district. Merced and Stanislaus for example utilize our fairgrounds, not just for a variety of agricultural events, but for local educational and charitable events throughout the year. The fairgrounds are one of our most vital assets.”
