Earlier this month the Mariposa SPCA was asked by Mariposa County to help rescue several animals made homeless by a fire in the North Side of the County. The property that was destroyed had a large number of animals. These animals became the responsibility of Mariposa County Animal Control to round up, control, and care for. As a result of this action, the SPCA now has 23 dogs, mother cats with kittens, chinchillas, rabbits, and a turtle that currently available for adoption. This will be a huge undertaking to provide everything these animals will need, from medical help, food, and vaccinations, as well as to spay and neuter all these animals. There were many more animals that could not be taken, because unfortunately the Mariposa SPCA simply does not have the room to house the large number of animals.

Right now the shelter needs volunteers to help care for all these animals. They need donations to help offset the cost of this effort. The SPCA will eventually need help getting these animals’ homes where they can enjoy happy and health lives.

With the onset of fire season, we encourage all animal owners to have a plan for their pets in case there’s a need for evacuation. Do not have more animals than you, yourself, can care for. Have cages and transport provisions ready. In the past the SPCA has been very active in helping during wildfires, but the animals have to be brought in to the shelter. Make sure you are able to do this yourself as emergency personnel will be engaged with fire suppression and helping those who are not mobile.

Can you help now? Please call (209) 966-5275 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. for more information and to volunteer your time.
