June 29, 2016 - SACRAMENTO – Assemblyman Frank Bigelow, R-O’Neals, led the State Assembly on June 27, 2016 in recognizing the importance of California’s fairgrounds to the state’s culture, economy, and public safety with the frank bigelow california assemblymanpassage of his resolution marking Fairground Appreciation Month.

“Most of the time when we think about fairs, we think about rides, games, and all of the delicious fried foods,” said Bigelow.  “California’s fairgrounds mean more than fried Twinkies and Ferris wheels.  They provide open space for emergency responders, provide a safe haven during disasters, and pump millions into our local economies.  Fair season is right around the corner, and I encourage all Californians to enjoy the upcoming fairs in their communities.”

Assembly Concurrent Resolution 186 designates the month of June as California Fairground Appreciation Month.

According to the most recent figures, state fairgrounds generated $856 million to California’s economy and employed over 25,000 full-time employees.  Last year, more than 750,000 people attended the California State Fair in Sacramento – and over 75,000 corn dogs were sold.  Bigelow noted that California’s fairgrounds benefit the local economies and create a ripple effect of economic activity and tourism dollars for the state.

Bigelow also said that California’s 76 fairgrounds are facilities where local communities show off the best of what they have to offer, including wines and locally-ground crops, livestock, and natural resources. Fairs also give local youth the opportunity to prepare to become the next generation of farmers and ranchers.
Lifelong rancher Frank Bigelow proudly represents the 5th Assembly District, which encompasses Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Madera, Mariposa, Mono, Placer, and Tuolumne counties and includes Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park.
