June 30, 2016 - Newly-licensed or soon-to-be-licensed teenage drivers between 14-19 and a parent or guardian are invited to participate in a free two-hour Start Smart interactive safe driving awareness class scheduled at the oakhurst california library madera countyOakhurst Branch Library from 10:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 16, 2016. The class will be held in the Oakhurst Library’s Community Room located at 49044 Civic Circle Drive, Oakhurst.

“The class is aimed at helping teens become more aware of the responsibilities that accompany the privilege of being a licensed California driver,” said Kaci Lutz, a California Highway Patrol officer serving the Oakhurst area who will be conducting the class.

Officer Lutz said the class will illustrate how “poor choices” behind the wheel of a vehicle can affect the lives of numerous people. It will also focus on the responsibilities of newly-licensed drivers, the responsibilities of parents and guardians and collision avoidance techniques.

According to statistics, motor vehicle collisions are the No. 1 killer of teens and their risk of collision is four times that of an experienced driver. The risk is highest when teens are in the first 12 to 24 months of licensure.

Officer Lutz has been a uniformed officer with the CHP for nine years. She graduated from Fresno State University with a degree in Criminology/Law Enforcement and the Highway Patrol Academy in 2007. She currently serves as Community Outreach and Public Event Officer for the CHP in the Oakhurst area.

She also served in the U.S. Army in the Coast Guard and two tours of duty in the Middle East. She and her husband, Chris, also a CHP officer, and their two children, live in the foothill community.

The Smart Start class for teen drivers is a free event sponsored by the Friends of the Oakhurst Branch Library. For more information, call the library at (559) 683-4838 or visit www.oakhurstfobl.com
