July 26, 2016 - The Aerospace Academy Summer STEM program at Fresno State culminating this week is providing 80 Madera high school students with hands-on, interactive NASA-based curriculum as part of NASA's Minority University Research and Education Project.

The program gives high school students an opportunity to develop technology skills while being introduced to careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Fresno State undergraduate students in the California Teaching Fellows Program assist with instruction.

Led by project director Russ Billings, a former NASA educator and physics teacher, students attend two classes per day from 8:30 a.m. to noon during the two week project (July 18-29). Classes include instruction on 3-D printing, Lego robotics, Minecraft (intro to quantum physics) and engineering design.

The NASA Aerospace Academy is one of nine academies nationwide. Madera Unified partners with the Kremen School of Education and Human Development to offer the academy. During the school year, similar classes are held in Madera after school and Saturdays.
