Bobcats and mountain lions and black bears, oh my! These are just a few of the wild animals prominent in Yosemite National Park and the surrounding foothill communities that Park Ranger Christine Raines will discuss in a workshop scheduled at the Oakhurst Branch Library from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, August 27, 2016.

Raines said her audience will learn about different wildlife habitats, their adaptations, physiology and behaviors as well as how these animals have adapted to foothill conditions.

“Each species lives a different story depending on the land they inhabit,” she explained.

Raines will instruct her audience about how to stay safe while surrounded by wildlife and she will bring objects like skins and skulls to demonstrate her subject.

Besides bobcats, mountain lions and black bears, Raines will also discuss raccoons, mule deer, red fox, coyotes, gray squirrels, peregrine falcons, Steller’s jays, Pacific fishers, field mice and rattlesnakes.

“These are the species most common in Yosemite and the foothills,” she said.

Raines is a member of Yosemite’s Education Team and has actively managed the mentoring program for interns coming to Yosemite. Her specialty has been “Parks as Classrooms” which is a ranger program to provide learning experiences to park visitors.
