The Oakhurst Library invites the public to share in its celebration marking the end of two exciting library summer programs. Both the Summer Reading Children and Teens program and the Teen Summer Art program will be concluded on Wednesday, July 30th with a ceremony at the Oakhurst Community Center located at 39800 Road 426B in Oakhurst. The young participants in the two programs will be honored at a combined Awards Ceremony.

The Summer Reading program was initiated in 2007 and included four-year-olds through fourth graders. The participants were motivated to read during the summer and, because of increased attendance and room capacity limits, the program was expanded to create a program for teens (grades 5th thru 12th).  In 2013, there were 56 families registered with 110 participants. And, in 2014, more than 93 families registered with 191 participants.

At the end of each week, the children and teens turned in reading logs and received a new book and a coupon donated by one or more businesses in Oakhurst. And, weekly prizes were awarded for weekly reading minutes and door prizes were awarded for program attendance.

On Wednesday, July 30th, the 2014 Reading Program will conclude with first, second and third prizes being awarded in four age categories. And, there will be special award for the participant with the highest number of minutes over the six-week program.  Also, each reader will be given the choice of one gift out of 40 gifts that were donated by the community.

During the month of July, 2014, local artist, Vicki Thomas, taught four art classes at the Teen Summer Art Program. These free classes were for students in grades 5 through 12 and all of the art supplies were included free of charge thanks to a generous donor.

At the opening class, 18 students attended and many were accompanied by a parent or guardian.  This was a class that concentrated on learning to draw by using five basic shapes (the circle, triangle, square, rectangle and cylinder).  Those shapes are used in all drawing and the class worked with black and white charcoal pencils to give their drawings depth.  All of the students brought their own individual creativity to their drawing of a panda bear.

In the following three classes, students were taught how to use pastels, were given an introduction to watercolor and, finally, were encouraged to use their new drawing and watercolor skills to create a watercolor masterpiece.

On Wednesday, July 30th, 2014, the students will be displaying their three pieces of art and a judge will award first, second and third prizes in all three categories of art: drawing, pastels and watercolor.

Refreshments will be available at the ceremony and the public is encouraged to attend.

The ceremony will be held at the Oakhurst Community Center (39800 Road 426B in Oakhurst) and will begin at 10 AM.
