Courtney Fire in Oakhurst, California Information for Friday, September 19, 2014

Advisory to Victims of Courtney Fire

Sheriff John Anderson, Director of The Madera County Office of Emergency Services continues to reach out to those impacted by the Courtney Fire disaster.

The Sheriff’s Office will have a booth set up outside Raley’s (40041 California 49) in Oakhurst tomorrow morning (Saturday September 20, 2014) from 9 AM to 11 AM.

Regardless of the levelof damage you may have suffered during this disaster, you are urged to fill out a damage survey, so that our office can better assist you during recovery.

The Courtney Disaster Survey is not an application for assistance. The purpose of the document is to gather information to assess the level of assistance needed, and to determine the extent of the disaster.

Sheriff’s Staff will also be available to register citizens who still have not signed up for MC-Alerts.

If you cannot make it to the venue listed above, the Sheriff’s office urges those who suffered damage and or loss, to call the Sheriff’s Office and ask for PIO Erica Stuart, 559-675-7770.

Again, the purpose of this survey is to help us find assistance programs, including grant dollars that we can bring into our community; as well as using this survey to help the Office of Emergency Services in assessing the impact of the Courtney fire disaster.

Road 426 is now open to all traffic. There are no longer any road restrictions in place. Please use caution as crews are still working in the area.
Updated information: Estimated Cost $3,400,000

#MaderaCountySheriff registered close to 500 people (just this week) to receive emergency alert notifications. If you haven't signed up, you are urged to either call the Sheriff's office at 559-675-7770 or log onto: www.mcalert.org.

Whether you live in Madera county year round or part time; whether you own a home or rent a home, you are urged to sign up. All we need is your name, the address you care about and a number to call so we can reach you. If you have a cell phone, we urge you to include that in your entry. That number does not have to be a local number. Remember, if we can't reach you, we can't alert you.

Road Closure Update

Road 426 remains closed to the public. If everything goes according to plan, CAL Fire hopes to reopen Road 426 sometime tonight.

As soon as fire crews and PG&E workers give the heads up, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office will issue a notification alert through MC-Alert to both residents and media about the status of Road 426.

Until that happens, Road 426 remains closed to Road 223 to the public for now. Only residents with passes, who live in that area, are being allowed access.

Updated Information: Arson the Cause of Oakhurst Area Fires
Latest Information from CAL Fire on fire investigations. Please read carefully. All questions are being handled by CAL Fire at this time.
September 18, 2014
Cause of Recent Oakhurst Fires
CAL FIRE Investigators, in cooperation with investigators from the United States Forest Service, have identified a juvenile suspect, in connection with a series of arson fires in Madera County. The fires all occurred in the Oakhurst area over the past several months. The case will be referred to the District Attorney in Madera County for appropriate action. The suspect allegedly intentionally started 13 fires.
The juvenile is not responsible for starting the active Courtney Fire, which has been burning since Sunday. CAL FIRE in cooperation with the Madera County Sheriff’s Department has identified the person believed to be responsible for starting the Courtney Fire. This case will also be referred to the District Attorney’s Office for appropriate action.
Investigators are still working on determining a cause for the Junction Fire; however, they do not believe either of these two individuals are connected with the cause of this fire.
