Northside-Pet-ConnectionOur NPC annual dinner was held on Friday evening, September 12, 2014 at the Coulterville Community Center. Once the proceedings had begun it was noticed that one of our dedicated members and former Board member, Lorrie Sue McClary, was not present. Turns out that very morning Lorrie Sue’s utility tractor tipped over and pinned her to the ground. She was unable to move and had sustained multiple fractures to one of her ankles and a leg. The good thing was that the three dogs she had brought into her home, Pretzel, Leroy and Sport, were all with her. These best friends started right away trying to help Lorrie Sue. Sport figured he could move the tractor by biting at one of the tires. Pretzel stood by Lorrie Sue to be sure she was okay. And Leroy showed the presence of mind to run and seek help. Since he did not usually bark, in this case his barking attracted the attention of Lorrie Sue’s mother, Dot, who lives nearby. Dot followed Leroy to the tractor. On the way, she heard her daughter crying for help, a sound Dot described as that of a peacock! Once she arrived at the scene, Dot, 74, was able to lift the tractor enough so Lorrie Sue got loose. One can only imagine how bad this situation could have been had not these wonderful canine companions been there to help! We wish a successful recuperation for Lorrie Sue, but it will likely take a number of months. Fortunately, Leroy, Pretzel, and Sport will be there for her.

In other news, the big announcement at the dinner was made by three representatives from the Mariposa SPCA. That animal welfare organization had voted to donate $10,000 to the NPC, a wonderful gift that will enable us to offer more spay/neuter vouchers each month, and will also permit us to increase the value of the vouchers. As always, our goal is to reduce the number of unwanted dogs and cats, and the SPCA grant will greatly help us move toward that goal.
