Just how natural are the “natural” cotton T-shirts hanging in our closets? And what will happen to those T-shirts and the other 82 pounds of textiles (on average) Americans discard each year?

Renee Sedoo of Groveland, a designer of upcycled clothing, will answer these and other questions about the fashion industry and its impact on society and the environment during a free workshop at the Mariposa Library on Saturday, February 25th, 2017 at 10 a.m.
MCL(Pictured): One of Renee Sedoo’s specialties is transforming bridesmaid dresses and wedding gowns into fashionable everyday wear.

In addition to providing fascinating information about textiles and sustainability, Renee, whose work has been featured in the magazine Altered Couture, will share some of her ideas for transforming old clothing and linens into clothing and other useful products. Following her presentation, participants can create a fabric flower or other upcycled piece from sweaters, t-shirts and other clothing donated by the Mariposa SPCA thrift store.

Also at 10 a.m. in the children’s room, kids of all ages can make a sock puppet from a discarded sock they bring from home (adult size, clean, holes are OK)  or one provided from the library and then put on a puppet show for their parents and friends.

The workshops are part of the Library’s Green S.T.E.A.M. Makerspace, which is supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.  Other supporters include the Mariposa Friends of the Library, Sierra Tel, the Mariposa SPCA and Mariposa County Public Works.

Green S.T.E.A.M. Makerspace programs, including free monthly adult and children’s workshops, as well as other classes, focus on sustainability and the five components of S.T.E.A.M.—science, technology, engineering, art and math.  For more information about the makerspace project, visit the Library’s website at MariposaLibrary.org, email karen.dusek@mariposalibrary.org or call 209-966-2140.
